Corrugated board combines liners with a shaped medium that creates cushioning and stacking strength. The flute profile affects thickness, compression performance, print surface, fold quality, storage cube, and the amount of material in the package.
Common planning choices
Fine flutes such as E and F are often considered for smaller retail-ready mailers and higher-quality graphics. B and C flutes are thicker and commonly evaluated for shipping protection. Double-wall combinations are used when greater stacking or puncture resistance is needed.
Do not select by letter alone
Performance also depends on liner and medium weights, recycled content, moisture, box style, dimensions, joint design, load direction, and distribution hazards. Two boards with the same flute designation may not perform identically.
Balance protection and cube
A thicker board may improve cushioning but also increases folded storage, master-carton volume, and parcel dimensions. The correct choice protects the product through the real distribution route without adding unnecessary material or freight cost.
