How Landed Packaging Cost Works

Calculate the complete cost per usable box by including tooling, freight, duties, brokerage, damage, inspection, and inventory effects.

Custom packaging decisions become easier when the project is defined in practical terms. Use this guide to prepare stronger specifications, avoid preventable delays, and have a more productive conversation with your packaging partner.

Start with manufacturing

Include the printed unit price, plates, dies, tooling, setup, material upgrades, finishes, inserts, sampling, prepress, and export packing. Identify which charges recur and which can be reused on an unchanged reorder.

Add the inbound journey

Include pickup, international freight, fuel or security surcharges, insurance, customs duties and tariffs, brokerage, port or terminal charges, delivery appointments, and final-mile transportation to the actual receiving location.

Divide by usable units

A low delivered total can still produce a high usable-unit cost if boxes arrive damaged, off color, misregistered, short, or unsuitable for packing. Include expected inspection, defects, replacements, rework, and disposal when comparing suppliers.

Include inventory economics

Long lead times and large minimums tie up cash and warehouse space and increase obsolescence risk when artwork, formulas, regulations, or forecasts change. Shorter lead times may justify a higher unit price when they reduce those costs.

Compare like-for-like scenarios

Normalize dimensions, board, print, finishes, quantity, packing, delivery destination, Incoterm, payment timing, and quality requirements. A quote is not truly lower until scope differences and exclusions are made visible.

Turn the guidance into a controlled specification

Share the details you already have. Direct Box Supply can help identify missing inputs, compare realistic options, and document the next decision.
