Use length × width × depth
Packaging dimensions are normally written as length × width × depth. Length is usually the longer dimension of the opening, width is the shorter dimension of that opening, and depth is the distance from the opening to the opposite panel. Confirm the sequence instead of assuming that every supplier labels panels the same way.
Choose inside or outside dimensions
For a box that must fit a product, usable inside dimensions usually matter most. Outside dimensions matter for master cartons, shelving, parcel rates, and pallet planning. State which measurement you are providing, because board thickness and folds create a real difference between the two.
Measure the product separately
Measure the widest, longest, and tallest points of the product, including closures, pumps, cables, protective bags, and anything else packed with it. Add only the clearance needed for insertion, tolerance, and cushioning; excessive space can increase material, freight, and damage risk.
Record weight and orientation
Dimensions alone do not describe the structural load. Record the product weight, required upright orientation, fragile areas, and whether units will be stacked. Photos beside a ruler and a simple sketch can help resolve ambiguity before a dieline is created.
Verify with a physical fit test
Before full production, test a blank sample or prototype with the actual product whenever fit is critical. A digital drawing can confirm geometry, but a physical fit test reveals loading difficulty, compression, movement, and closure problems.
