A prototype tests form and communication
A digitally printed, hand-cut, plotted, or otherwise short-run prototype can help evaluate size, structure, artwork placement, copy, and general appearance. Materials and finishes may differ from the final production process.
A production sample tests the intended process
A production-representative sample uses the proposed material, print, tooling, and finishes as closely as practical. It can reveal color, registration, coating, scoring, gluing, and finish interaction more accurately, but it generally costs more and takes longer.
Know what is not proven
One approved sample does not prove the defect rate or consistency of an entire run. Conversely, a prototype made by a different method should not be treated as a precise color or finish standard. The quote should identify the sample type and its limitations.
Choose based on risk
A blank structural sample may be enough for a straightforward carton with proven artwork. A new rigid structure, critical fit, complex insert, regulated label area, or expensive launch may justify a more representative sample.
Control changes after approval
