The structural map
A dieline is the flat technical drawing used to cut, score, fold, glue, and print a package. It shows panel sizes and relationships, but it is not merely an outline for decoration; changing a structural line can change how the box manufactures and closes.
Read the line types
Cut lines define the final perimeter and openings. Score or crease lines indicate folds. Bleed extends artwork beyond a cut edge. Safe areas keep critical text and marks away from cuts, folds, and manufacturing variation. Glue zones and no-print areas protect adhesion.
Check panel orientation
Panels that look upside down on the flat drawing may become correct when the box folds. Confirm the opening direction, front panel, top and bottom, inside versus outside printing, and which panels meet at seams before placing artwork.
Protect the approved structure
Do not scale, stretch, redraw, or move dieline geometry unless the structural designer approves the change. Place the dieline on a separate locked layer and keep it visible for prepress review but excluded from the printed artwork output.
Approve both structure and graphics
A digital proof verifies content and placement; a blank or printed prototype helps verify fit and assembly. Final approval should identify the exact dieline and artwork revision authorized for production.
